Greg Martin
Greg enjoyed a long career of over 50 years in the Ports and Maritime Industries starting as a graduate civil engineer with the Qld Dept of Harbours and Marine in 1971 until retiring from his last role as a Director of the Port of Brisbane Corporation in 2023. Greg had a very diversified career working with the Ports Corporation of Queensland and various Port Authorities in Queensland which included involvement in the development of the Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point coal terminals until he was appointed as CEO of the Port of Brisbane Corporation in 1990. He held that position to 1996 and led the major expansion of the Fisherman Islands facilities encompassing some 200 ha of land reclamation, new container berths and the connection of standard gauge rail to the port.
Following his time as CEO of Brisbane Ports Corporation, Greg was appointed CEO of the Sydney Ports Corporation in 1996 until 2007. During this time, Greg was instrumental in obtaining NSW Gov approval to the development of the Third Container Terminal in Port Botany and the development of the Enfield Multi Modal Terminal. His time at Sydney Ports included managing the Port through the very busy period leading up to and during the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
In 2007, Greg was appointed to the position of Regional Director Oceania ( Australia and New Zealand) for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, the world’s largest roll- on roll -off operator, a position he held until 2012. After 2012, Greg retired from any further full time roles to take up various part- time Board Director roles.
The last and most significant of these roles was as a Director of the Brisbane Port Corporation which he held for nearly 10 years till 2023. This was a very satisfying way for Greg to complete his involvement with ports after beginning his working career on Port of Brisbane related projects in 1971.
As CEO of the Sydney Ports, Greg also served as President of the Association of Port and Marine Authorities – forerunner to Ports Australia- for some 5 years till 2007.
Greg’s achievements in the Maritime Industry were recognised by receiving the Australian Maritime Hall of Fame Award in 2007.
